Coconut Oil – The Natural Wonder for Your Hair & Skin

By now most people are aware of the hidden chemicals and additives in every day beauty products like body lotion and shampoo that can be seriously harmful for our health. About a year ago, I heard about using organic, Extra Virgin Coconut Oil as a substitute for moisturizer and a deep conditioning hair mask, and I have been hooked ever since.

Coconut oil is known as one of the best natural sources of nutrition for hair. As an added bonus, it leaves hair silky, soft and strong. It is an excellent conditioner, and also helps to repair damage hair and encourage regrowth by providing plenty of the protein needed for healthy hair. To use coconut oil for hair, apply it liberally to damp hair from roots to ends and let it sit for 45 minutes to an hour. Wash it out thoroughly – you may need to shampoo your hair more than once. The result if soft, manageable hair that lasts for days. It is honestly better than any deep conditioner I have ever bought at a store, although it can be a little messy to apply. Wear an old shirt and don’t plan on hanging out with anyone besides your pets for the time it is in your hair!

Coconut oil is also a wonderful moisturizer for pretty much all skin types. Coconut oil rarely causes any kind of reaction, so it is great for even the most sensitive skin. It prevents dryness and flaking, and also delays wrinkles and other effects of aging on the skin. The oil also has a host of antioxidants for the skin which promotes healthy and strong skin, which shows! To apply, use it as you would a moisturizer, and remember that a little goes a long way. Coconut oil is solid until it touches your skin, because the heat of your skin causes it to melt almost instantly. Rub it evenly on your body, careful not to use an excessive amount so that the oil does not stain your clothing. I like to use the oil on my face as well, but only in the evening as it can make you look a little shiny! Added bonus: coconut oil has a delicious, nutty, natural smell that is incredibly pleasant for the senses!

The coconut oil I use is Spectrum brand organic oil, but that is only because that happens to be the kind my local health food store carries. I’m sure that most brands are comparable, just try to buy organic. As I mentioned previously, coconut oil is actually solid – like a firm vaseline – until it comes into contact with your body heat, at which point it easily melts. Some people like to place the closed tub of oil in warm water to melt it before application, but I find that scooping some out with my fingers and letting it melt with my body heat works just fine.

Coconut oil is a wonderful, inexpensive luxury for your skin and your senses. Try it out next time instead of your usual body lotion, and I’m sure you will be hooked!

  1. I loooveeeed your post. I already use organic argan oil in hair, skin, dry products. The coconut oil I usally take them in caps during the day. Never have heard you ca use it like beauty product. I’ll be certainly lookng for it for the next days. Thank you so much for so many inspiring posts!   4. I love coconut oil for my hair and skin. My hair has never been so healthy and I feel like I’ve been searching for that “magic product” for my hair and skin and proud to say that I have found it… coconut oil!!
