Meet my nutritious new friend, Spirulina

I’m always looking for things that can help increase my vitality and make me feel great inside and out. My latest find is Spirulina, a form of Algae found in tropical and sub-tropical bodies of water that is a great source of all kinds of vitamins and minerals. Before you back out of this post wondering why I’m promoting eating algae, something most people avoid in water, check out these interesting facts about Spirulina.

  • Spirulina is a type of blue-green algae that is rich in protein, vitamins,  minerals, and carotenoids, antioxidants that can help protect cells from damage.  It contains nutrients, including B complex vitamins, beta-carotene, vitamin E,  manganese, zinc, copper, iron, selenium, and gamma linolenic acid (an essential  fatty acid).
  • A number of studies suggest that Spirulina increases  production of antibodies, infection-fighting proteins, and other cells that  improve immunity and help ward off infection and chronic illnesses such as  cancer.
  • Amino acids make up 62% of Spirulina.
  • Spirulina is said to be the world’s richest source of vitamin B12, (needed, especially by vegetarians, for healthy red blood cells).
  • Spirulina can increase energy and decrease fatigue.

As with anything, if you are going to give Spirulina a try, make sure you get it from a trusted brand. Many lesser-known brands are said to be contaminated by environmental toxins. The brand I use is Nutrex-Hawaii Spirulina Pacific, which can be found at Whole Foods Market and most health food stores. According to their site:

Personally, I have been taking Spirulina for a few weeks and have been feeling great. Coincidence? Perhaps – but it is enough to make me want to stick with it and see what benefits it has in store for me. I bought the powder form, and have been adding it to my daily green smoothie.

  2. The best advice of my yoga teacher here in Mexico is Spirulina, makes you stronger and stronger. 2 in the morning, 2 in the afternoon and 2 at night. 🙂
